Parkes Concert weekend

18 June 2007

An audience of over 150 people enjoyed a variety of local performers, as well as two substantial brackets of songs from the Australian Rugby Choir. The finale saw all performers on stage for performances of 'I am Australian' and 'Cwm Rhondda'. A magnificent supper was provided by members of the Parkes Quota Club, who also had a fine lunch ready for us on arrival in Parkes earlier in the day.The Concert was a fund-raiser for CanAssist, a local support group for cancer sufferers and their famlies. MC for the night was Geoff Rice, a Stock and Station Agent auctioneer, and President of the Parkes Boars Rugby Club.

Earlier in the day the choir sang at the Pioneer Oval before a match between the Boars and Cowra, and presented items to be auctioned in two weeks time at the Club's 40th Aniiversary Dinner - including a signed football from the Brumbies. Other items presented were a signed and framed Brumbies shirt donated by choir member Ric Dresser, and a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label whisky donated by Ron Ainsworth of Diagio Australia Pty Ltd, via Wal Cooper.

On Sunday morning the choir visited and performed a short program at the Salvation Army's Rosdurnate Nursing Home, before setting off for a visit to the 'the Dish' - the Parkes Radio telescope. After lunching there it was time to set off for home - with a short 'pit stop' at the Boorowa pub, for a cleansing ale, and more to eat! Our visit was marked by a lively performance of 'Stout-hearted Men', with Whiskers excelling himself.

Overall a very successful and enjoyable weekend - to be savoured - and repeated!
