14 October 2010

Annual Recognition Dinner is on the Friday, 19th November

The gig sheet is available to indicate, hopefully, that you and partner will attend. Please fill in your details. Fuller information will be available soon when Eddy Stevens concludes some final aspects with University House.

The Patron's Award will be made as usual at this function. I need someone to volunteer to act as Returning Officer for members' nominations of worthy recipients.

In recent years, Ian Robertson has done this job but he is in the throes of moving from Canberra to Lake Macquarie in NSW simultaneously as he recovers from one of the dreaded lurgies afflicting the neighbourhood. Ian will be retaining his membership, attending Alpha's practice and the Sydney Concert and continuing to attend practices and selected gigs from afar into the future which is great news. We wish Ian well in these changes in his life.

Please contact me if you can take on the duties of Returning Officer for this important award in our choir. We need to get proceedings underway soon.

Committee Membership

The committee has decided to co-opt the services of Peter Cole on to the committee. Peter indicated his availability and willingness to serve and he will attend from the next meeting of the committee on 9th November. Thank you Peter.

Uniform Survey

The committee has received initial data and comments from the 42 respondents. A report and recommendations are being prepared.

Forum Review

Members will recall that a provision of February's Members' Forum was for a review by, and feedback from members of the outcomes and expectations of that forum. It is expected that a straightforward replication of those outcomes will be forwarded to all members soon with the opportunity to express opinions, suggestions, views, reactions, etc and, generally, offer comment on how you think we are travelling.

Student Research

Andrea and I had the opportunity recently of meeting with a student from the School of Music who was doing research for his university assignment on community musical associations. I thought you would be interested to know that, following discussion about funding, financial considerations, links to community and actual performances, our student friend stated that he believed that the ARC would have to be the most active community musical organisation in the region after the RMC Band Duntroon. He promised to provide me with a copy of his completed assignment.

Member Welfare
Great to hear that Jim Cleaver and Ian Kentwell are responding well to some recent treatment for ailments. Hope to see and hear them back in our midst soon.

Regards
Neil

South Coast Weekend 16 & 17 October
Still not too late to decide to join the 20 or so members travelling to Moruya and Eden. With the weather looking ugly for Canberra over the weekend, why not come and sing at the coast gigs where the forecast is at least a bit warmer.

Saturday 16 October Festival of Voice

Points to note:

Andrea will be conducting and our accompanist is Karen.

Two and half hour drive to Moruya
Must collect black wristband from Festival Office before going to the Community Centre
Assemble at the Dr McKay Community Centre, Page Street, Moruya at 2:30pm.
Uniform is short-sleeved polo shirt TUCKED IN to trousers. It is indoors so we will not need brown hats or blue jackets.

The repertoire is Divine Brahma, Rachie, A Roving, Anthem (from Chess); The Water is Wide and Battle Hymn. Bring your blue folder. Everything will be sung without books unless someone desperately needs to use them.

REGISTRATION, Singers' wristbands are black and can be collected from the Festival Office, in the old Commonwealth Bank building opposite the newsagents, and are in the block of shops nearest the bridge in Vulcan Street (main street of Moruya). The building will be clearly marked.

Gig sheet participants as at mid-September have been paid for by the choir. We may have to pay for the couple of extra names added since then. Names will be checked off that list. The wristband must be worn on the wrist and not pinned to clothing. The black wristband indicates free entry to any venue for the whole weekend.

The venue for FOV is in the RSL Hall. We are the first Choir performing after the interval, at 3:30 pm for a 20 minute bracket.

With a two hour drive to Eden we need to leave Moruya by say 4.00pm to arrive in Eden by 6.00pm.

Rooms have been reserved at the Halfway Motel in the main street and about 500 metres from the Fishermen's Club. Availability of rooms at the Halfway was guaranteed only until Friday 8th October and members need to make reservations by phoning 64961178. Ask to speak with Lorraine and mentioning the ARC booking. If you miss out on the Halfway, there are a number of other motels in town with a number on the Princes Highway.

Dinner has been arranged in the main dining room of the local Fishermen's Club from 7.00pm. The club has publicised our attendance and there should be quite a number of people in town for the weekend's events. A couple of local choirs have agreed to attend and sing so that we should have a good old knees-up. We are still uncertain as to performance times at this gig so you are asked to carefully consider any alcoholic intake before performance as per our usual expectations. Firmer details should be available before we leave Moruya for Eden.
Don Whitbread will be conducting and our accompanist is Karen.

Dress is the same as for Moruya, polo shirts tucked into trousers, etc.

REPERTOIRE, at Don's discretion, will be taken from the Brumbies Song lists, I Am Australian, Walk a Country Mile, Snowy River Roll, Road to Gundagai, Santa Lucia, Siyahamba, Tshotsholosa, Maori Farewell, Calypso Medley, Funiculi Funicula, Stout Hearted Men; and maybe some from the Moruya repertoire.

Sunday 17 October Canonisation of Mother Mary MacKillop

Points to note:
Don Whitbread will be conducting and Karen our accompanist.

UNIFORM WILL BE BLUE CHAMBRAY SHIRT AND TIE. This is different to what has been advised on the website calendar which has now been corrected.

After breakfast, assemble at 10.15am at Our Lady of the Sea Catholic Church to commence singing at 10.30am.

The Hymns to be sung before the Mass are Battle Hymn, Rachie, Cwm Rhondda, Amazing Grace, Calon Lan, How Great Thou Art and (possibly) Gwahoddiad. These will be sung WITH books except for Battle Hymn and Rachie.

Lunch will be served at 12.30pm in the adjacent church hall and from 1.30pm, entertainment will be provided by various choral groups back in the church and the ARC will be first to perform so that we can be on the road by say 2.00pm.

REPERTOIRE is as for Moruya the day before. And we will still be dressed in our shirt/tie uniform.

Warrigal Nursing Home - Queanbeyan 19 October

APPEALING FOR EXTRA NUMBERS PLEASE!! The gig sheet contained only a reasonable list of names. Please attend if you possibly can. We realise that notice for this gig has been relatively short due to difficulties in determining mutually agreeable times with the venue, conductor and accompanist.

Venue is at the corner of Campbell Street and Canberra Avenue. See website calendar for advice about parking and access.

Time to assemble at 1:30 pm for 20 to 30 minute performance at 2pm.

Colin Fischer will conduct us, and Miriam Miley-Read will accompany us on the piano
Uniform Polo shirts.

REPERTOIRE is to be taken from the Brumbies Song lists. Walk a Country Mile, Snowy River roll, Road to Gundagai, Santa Lucia, Siyahamba, Tshotsholosa, Maori Farewell, Delilah.
